Artist Statement

I wanted to be an abstract painter before I even knew that I could paint. To be an artist was never an option for me growing up. Actuality, I never knew a real professional artist until I entered college. However, I grew up with very talented women who used their creative abilities to make their homes, families, towns and churches places of incredible opportunities for me to experience a vast variety of creative experiences that have shaped my life journey.

College courses in art stimulated my interest even more but it was not until later that I had the opportunity to really paint. Starting out as a photo-realist, I learned to see that which was in front of me. Details are very important. Over the years, I have painted in oil, watercolor and acrylic. I have studied with many wonderful instructors and practiced the rules of art—Principles and Elements of Design, Composition, Color, Perspective until I now apply them without thinking—which lead me to where I wanted to be—Abstract.

To paint abstract is a pure joy and a struggle. Applying all of those art rules and breaking a few requires determination to succeed. The process is the art.

I like all styles of abstraction and paint a variety. My layered paintings are achieved by multiple pourings and knowing when and how to react to the paint. My brush work paintings are like icing on a cake. To be able to play in paint—to see it—feel it — and apply it to canvas or paper is exciting.

Welcome to my creative world.
